How to get to Waiheke Island

From Auckland International and Domestic Airport…

There are a couple of options to get from the Airport to us here on Waiheke Island.

Bus: Skybus  Operates 24 hours per day and leaves every 10-15 minutes from Airport Terminal to the Ferry Terminal (downtown ) Cost is $16 one way. You can book online or pay at the airport. Approx 50-60 mins

Taxi: Cheaptaxi  these guys reckon they’re the cheapest in town and I have to admit they offer a pretty competitive fixed rate.

Rental Car: This option is only suitable for those travelling around New Zealand, otherwise it is more convenient to get a car on the island for the time you are staying there. Order a rental car in advance (all the major ones are there ) and drive to the car ferry (allow 1 hour ) which leaves from Half Moon Bay which is then a 45-60 minute ride Sealink . Note the last ferry is 6pm from Half Moon Bay and you will need to book your trip. There is a car ferry from Wynyard wharf in downtown Auckland, however limited sailings and times on selected days (Fri/Sat/Sun).

From the Ferry Terminal Downtown Auckland…

Once you arrive at the Downtown ferry terminal the Fullers Ferry leaves every ½ hour. Return tickets can be bought at the terminal and there is no need to make a booking. There can be quite a queue, depending on the time of year and time of day.

The Ferry is a 35-40 minute sailing and brings you into the terminal at Matiatia.

Once you arrive on Waiheke…

From Waiheke Island Ferry Terminal.
Walk: From the Ferry terminal take the main road ( only road!) up a gentle rise to the village of Oneroa. This is an easy 15-20 minute stroll.
Bus: All ferries are met by the local bus company. All the busses will bring you to Oneroa Village, 2-3 minutes journey, The Onetangi Bus will drop you at the Library, ask the driver to stop there for you, Oneroa B and B is then 30 odd meters in the same direction the bus was travelling on the opposite side of the road.
Taxi: There are generally quite few taxis at the taxi stand but you might be best to book one to guarantee a ride. Try Island Taxis.
